"Stitches"

PICTURE EDITOR/SOUND EDITOR/TITLE DESIGN

This excellent AFI film takes place in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The opening scene showed the two main characters, a mother and daughter, in flood waters clutching their possessions (filmed in an indoor pool in Los Angeles). There was no reference in the dialogue to Katrina or New Orleans.

To tell the audience where and when the story was set, and to begin the film dramatically, I used newsreel footage of the flood and Katrina rescue efforts and created a multiple panel montage. Over this montage I laid in sounds of thunder and rain, a quote from Mayor Ray Nagin, and the blues song "Trouble So Hard," as remixed by Moby. Towards the end of the montage, I gradually introduced the footage of the mother and daughter in the pool that begins the story.
